Pueblo artist advocate passes on

Well-known artist and political advocate Joe Hilario Herrera of Cochiti Pueblo died on Wednesday. He was 80.

Herrera was recognized internationally for his paintings. His work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and he received one of the highest honors from the French government in 1954.

Herrera was secretary of the All Indian Pueblo Council from 1953 to 1967. In his role, he often testified before Congress.
