MAY 11, 2001

A group of Japanese ships left Tokyo on Thursday, bound for a two-month whaling expedition in the northwest Pacific Ocean.

The ships are expected to catch 160 whales, mostly minke. Some 50 Bryde's whales and 10 sperm whales are also expected hunted.

The project is billed as scientific exploration but the international community has objected to the hunt.
