JUNE 12, 2000

The 800 residents of the Kickapoo reservation in northeast Kansas have faced drought conditions for the past month. The Delaware River, the only water supply for the 30-square mile reservation, barely trickles over a concrete dam now.

Nancy Bear, acting vice chairwoman of the tribal council, says the reservation has received a half-inch of rain in the past three weeks. Bear said the tribe could run out of water in two weeks.

Recently, 3 potential water sites have been found on the reservation. The Kansas Geological Survey finished their drilling on Wednesday and will submit a report within two weeks.
