Genetically altered salmon up for approval

OCTOBER 17, 2000

The Federal Drug Administration is considering approving the sale of genetically-modified salmon for human consumption.

The salmon is spliced with growth genes from another fish, the arcticpout. The genes enable the salmon to grow two to four times faster than normal and a picture of the salmon on The Washington Post web site shows the salmon are larger than normal.

Critics question if eating the salmon is safe and say it could hurt the environment. Wild Atlantic and some species of Pacific salmon are endangered or depleted.
