SEPTEMBER 20, 2000

As promised, the state of Washington has filed suit against the Yakama Nation over its ban the sale and consumption of alcohol within reservation borders.

Reports of alleged surveillance by tribal members help prompt yesterday's filing. Allegedly, tribal members were videotaping customers who were patronizing various liquor establishments.

The tribe instituted the ban, which they say is protected by treaty rights and federal law, as a means to help curb alcohol abuse. It went into effect officialy this past Sunday.
