If the Oneida Nation wants to open one of three casinos in the Castkills region of New York, the state should settle its long-running land claim, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has told Gov. George Pataki (R).

A spokesperson said the tribe is considering operating a casino. Mark Emery also invited Schumer to visit the tribe's operation in upstate New York.

The Supreme Court has said the tribe is owed compensation for 250,000 acres of stolen land. The state, two counties and the tribe have failed to come to an agreement.

Land claim issues notwithstanding, an anti-treaty rights group is urging a boycott of businesses who buy gas at the Oneida Nation's gas stations. Upstate Citizens for Equality have come up with a list of about 60 businesses whose vehicles buy tax-free tribal gas.

"If you buy gas from the Indians, you're against us," one UCE member told The Syracuse Post-Standard.
