MAY 10, 2000 The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island opposes an expedition planned by the Mashantucket Pequot's Museum and Research Center. The Connecticut tribe is planning to search for ancient Indian villages off Block Island next week. The historic preservation officer of the Narragansett tribe says federal law requires the Pequot to notify the tribe of any archaeological exploration. Block Island is within Rhode Island waters and is part of Narragansett land, said John Brown. He said the Narragansett will take legal action if the Museum and its partner, the Institute for Exploration of Mystic, Connecticut, intend to continue without their input. Get the Story:
