Leaders of the Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut on Monday made a pitch to lawmakers to open a $500 million casino in New London.

The tribe and its financial backer, golf resort developer David Rosow, have identified the city as one of their prime locations for a casino should they win final federal recognition and successfully negotiate a compact with the state. The casino would be located at the Adm. Harold E. Shear State Pier.

Lawmakers who heard the pitch, which took place in Hartford, the state capitol, had varying opinions on the proposal. But those who represent districts in an around the New London area had concerns about the project, mostly disapproving of it.

The region is home to casinos owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe. The Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe have received preliminary federal recognition and a final decision is expected by the end of the year.
