Officials in southeastern Connecticut are hopeful the Legislature will approve a budget that gives more money from tribal casinos to their communities.

The casinos owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe are expanding. The expansions are expected to bring in $30 million.

Of this amount, the communities want $10 million. They have devised a formula to distribute it amongst themselves, with more going to municipalities hosting or closest to the casinos.

Such communities already receive money from the casinos. But the state has a complex formula on how the funds are distributed, so communities that need it more usually get more money and these ones tend to be further away from the casinos.

Lawmakers say they need more justificiation the communities deserve more impact aid.
