Conn. Democrats can't find challengers

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2001

Three Republican and independent leaders of the Connecticut town of North Stonington are running for re-election unopposed because the local Democratic party can't recruit challengers.

As a result, the town's position against three Pequot tribes is unlikely to change. Although residents have voiced objections as well, the leaders have been at the forefront of the fight against the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, the Eastern Pequor Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe.

The town recently dropped out of talks with the Mashantucket Tribe over trust land. The three town leaders say they will continue to oppose land-into-trust applications.

The leaders also say they will continue to oppose the federal recognition petitions of the two other Pequot tribes.
