WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2001 During a speech to the Alaska Native Brotherhood convention on Tuesday, Gov. Tony Knowles (D) said he will push the state Legislature on several Native issues. Knowles said law enforcement, school funding and hate crimes are at the top of his list. In particular, he criticized the Legislature for not holding a hearing on a hate crimes bill. This year, Knowles set up a panel to discuss racism against Alaska Natives and others. He also dropped an appeal of the Katie John Native subsistence case. Knowles' term ends next year.
