Navajos want outside review of water settlement

The Din Bitzill Navajo Strength coalition of Navajo grassroots activists is calling for an independent review of the tribe's proposed water settlement.

The group says tribal members have been kept in the dark about the proposal. They say a study by an outside law firm is necessary to let people know what the settlement entails.

The deal would provide finality to the tribe's rights on the San Juan River. But key lawmakers are balking at the cost, estimated at $1.2 billion, of the project, which includes a pipeline to the off-reservation city of Gallup, New Mexico.
