Former Navajo president opposes water deal

Former Navajo Nation chairman Peter MacDonald is warning the tribe not to accept a water rights settlement with the state of New Mexico and the federal government.

MacDonald says the tribe will be giving up rights to millions of acre-feet of water in the San Juan River. He says the government has never fulfilled its promises to the tribe.

The Navajo Nation Council is set to consider the agreement today. The tribe would receive about 600,000 acre-feet of water a year but a $328 million irrigation project has been removed due to objections about the cost of the settlement.
