Editorial: It's about time Kennewick Man case ends

"It looks as though scientists may finally get a break in their quest for more knowledge about the peopling of North America. The issue concerns Kennewick Man, the nearly complete skeleton found on the banks of the Columbia River in 1996. Initial tests showed the bones to be about 9,400 years old.

Under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, the government took possession of the bones shortly after they were found and planned to hand them over for reburial to an Indian tribe. A number of scientists sued for the right to conduct further studies on the bones, and the courts have been dealing with the dispute ever since, with their usual glacial speed"
