As the first woman to be elected chairwoman of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, Erma Vizenor has seen some successes and setbacks in her first year of office.

Vizenor said she is pleased the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe is holding a constitutional election later this month. She said the changes are needed to develop a system of checks and balances within the tribal government. Her campaign promised more accountability and less corruption in government.

The setbacks included the defeat of an urban casino that the White Earth Band proposed with two other Ojibwe bands. Other tribes in the state criticized the proposal.
