Markers at Little Bighorn to honor Lakota warriors

Correction/Clarification: The battle took place on June 25, 1876, not June 24 as previously posted.

To commemorate the 130th anniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn, the National Park Service is dedicating markers to eight Lakota warriors who died on the day of the June 25, 1876, battle.

Two markers are being placed at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. The remaining eight are being unveiled at the Reno-Benteen Battlefield.

Up until recently, there were no markers to honor the Lakota and Cheyenne warriors who fought in the battle. Working with tribal historians, NPS has since placed 18 markers at the Little Bighorn and Reno-Benteen sites.
