Editorial: UND faces sanctions for use of 'Fighting Sioux' nick

"There is one chance left. It’s a long shot at this point, with somewhat worse odds than are offered by pulling the goalie in the last minutes of a hockey game.

That chance will unfold when North Dakota and UND leaders meet with executives at the NCAA. (And by the way, that meeting can’t happen soon enough.)

At that meeting, maybe the NCAA can be convinced to relax its policy against tribal logos and let give UND keep its Fighting Sioux nickname.

Maybe.

But probably not. And if the NCAA says “No,” as expected, then North Dakota lawmakers should start taking steps to repeal the state’s new nickname law."
