Young Navajo woman leads petition against racist trademarks

A young member of the Navajo Nation is leading the campaign to cancel the racist trademarks of the Washington NFL team.

Amanda Blackhorse represents a new generation of Native activists who oppose the use of the name. She's inspiring other young Navajos, a Navajo Nation Council lawmaker said.

“It’s more prevalent among the younger generation of Navajos, and even more so from the urban Navajos, the ones living in the city,” Delegate Lavar Butler, who supports Blackhorse's efforts, told Cronkite News Service.

On June 18, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board issued its long-awaited decision in Blackhorse v. Pro Football Inc. The board held that the team's trademarks are "disparaging" to Native Americans.

The team is appealing the ruling to the federal court system. It could take years before a final ruling.
