The Dirt

Cherokee citizens inside the Beltway are still smarting over a decision by assistant secretary Larry EchoHawk to treat the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians like an actual tribe instead of, well, like the stepchild of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Who would have thought that EchoHawk, in the words of Secretary Ken Salazar, supports the right of ALL tribes to follow the land-into-trust process? The horror!

So it's not surprising that this bit of gossip landed on our desks today. And it's too good to pass up because it involves In The Hoop's favorite Interior Department attorneys -- Edith Blackwell and Scott Keep -- along with someone who worked for Gale Norton, who was the best woman to serve as Interior Secretary in history, ever.

According to our tipster, the UKBs wanted to fire Michael Rossetti, who served as Norton's counselor before becoming a partner at Akin Gump, as their attorney. Which doesn't make any sense, seeing as how he totally won the Arkansas River case. But this is gossip and it doesn't have to make any sense, it just has to be good!

Anyways, in case you don't follow the love triangles at 1849 C Street NW: Michael Rossetti and Edith Blackwell, our favorite Interior solicitor, are hooked up. The pair bonded post-9/11 over their love of Cobell, No Child Left Behind Act negotiated rule-making and turquoise jewelry.

[That and Blackwell's husband died (RIP) and there's only so much hanging out with Aurene Martin and Theresa Rosier, who used to be Neal McCaleb's angels at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, that a white lady can take before she seeks other comforts.]

A firing by the UKBs would be devastating to the Rossetti-Blackwell household, so our tipster says Edith, who is always scheming, went to Scott Keep, our second favorite Interior solicitor, and "they together cooked up a plan to submit to the newly appoint OBAMA (green) Secretary for Indian Affairs the basis for a ruling that would make a determination that favored Rossetti client, keep him employed, and receive a bonus."

[Don't you love how OBAMA is capitalized? It makes it sound more dramatic! Oh and "green" we are pretty sure means the White House is in the tank with lobbyists and lawyers.]

So there you go! Michael gets to keep billing the UKBs for gazillions of dollars and Edith gets to keep buying jewelry. Because Interior is corrupt.

But just what does Scott, whom a separate tipster believes was the one who wrote the UKB decision, get out of this? Who cares! This post is too long anyway.
