California tribes contribute to problem gambling

California's gaming tribes have contributed $6 million in the past two years to the state's Office of Problem Gambling but experts say the state isn't doing enough.

The office was created six years ago but has no full-time staff. So far, its only expenditure has been a $95,000 study.

With the state's gaming industry expanding in recent years, experts say the state needs to do more. Another expansion is on the horizon under new gaming compacts or under two rival gaming propositions.

Tribes have so far been the sole contributors to the office. Card clubs and racetracks should also share, says Jacob Coin, executive director of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association.
