Schwarzenegger says he will sign more compacts

printer friendly
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) says he will sign gaming compacts with five more tribes.

Schwarzenegger wants tribes to share more of their revenues with the state. So far, he has convinced about a dozen tribes to do that.

But the majority of tribes have balked at new deals. They say they will continue operating under compacts signed by former governor Gray Davis even if they impose a limit on the number of slot machines.

The compacts Schwarzenegger has negotiated require tribes to finance a $1 billion bond package for the state in exchange for offering more than 2,000 slot machines. The tribes will share a percentage of the slot revenues.

Schwarzenegger campaigned against a ballot initiative that would have created an alternative gaming compact. Proposition 70 failed by a wide margin on Tuesday.
