Oakland City Council votes against casino project

printer friendly
The Oakland, California, City Council voted 5-0 on Tuesday night to oppose a casino proposed by the Lower Lake Rancheria-Koi Nation. There were two abstentions.

The vote came after a three-hour meeting during which blasted the idea. But most of the opponents were not from Oakland, NBC 11 News reported.

The landless tribe wants to take 35 acres in trust near the Oakland airport. The council's vote could influence the federal government's decision and the state's willingness to negotiate a gaming compact.

The tribe was placed back on the list of federally recognized entities in January 2001 after the Bureau of Indian Affairs determined that the tribe was never terminated.
