Lytton Band to scale back plans for Bay Area casino

printer friendly
The Lytton Band of Pomo Indians announced plans to reduce the size of its proposed Bay Area casino as an opponent held a hearing on the controversial proposal.

The tribe is converting a card club into a Class III facility. Earlier plans called for 2,500 slot machines but officials say there will not be a hotel or high-rise.

Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, a Democrat from Berkeley, is fighting the idea. She held a public hearing on Sunday and says most residents don't want the casino in their backyard. The San Francisco Chronicle said opponents outnumbered supporters at the meeting.

The site in San Pablo was taken into trust under a Congressional rider. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) said she will introduce a bill to repeal the measure.
