Column: Governor's support of slots 'deplorable'

"Governor Carcieri has been eloquent and accurate in denouncing the dangers of having a full-fledged casino in Rhode Island. So his willingness to support an ambitious video-slot escalation and renovation at Lincoln Park is deplorable.

Carcieri said the place needs refurbishing, and additional machines would make that financially practical. At the same time, he said, increased revenues to the state would allow for local property tax relief. And he touted the idea of helping the Narragansetts by earmarking some income for a tribal economic development fund. At least that's what he'd like to see, but he also told me he envisions no restrictions on how the Indians would use the money. If they wanted, he said, they could divide it up and pocket it each year. (I wonder how that would go over with the public.)"
