Doubts voiced on deal to help Narragansett Tribe

Some key lawmakers in Rhode Island are questioning whether a proposal to help the Narragansett Tribe is sincere.

BLB Investors wants to buy the Lincoln Park track and slot parlor for $435 million. As part of the deal, Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) says a portion of the slot revenues -- estimated at $6.9 million a year -- should go to the tribe.

House Speaker William J. Murphy, a Democrat, says he wants to know where that suggestion came from. He supports the Narragansett Tribe's efforts to open a full-fledged casino but questioned "whose idea it was it to take care of the Indians." Another lawmaker, Rep. Timothy A. Williamson, said Carcieri is trying to buy off the tribe because he opposes the casino.

Senate Finance Chairman Stephen D. Alves, a Democrat, introduced a bill last week to authorize the Narragansett casino and put it on the November ballot.
