Plan for state-tribal casino in Minnesota falters

Lawmakers in Minnesota say the controversial casino deal between the state and three tribes has fallen apart now that one tribe has rejected a proposed merger with a non-Indian racetrack.

The Leech Lake, White Earth and Red Lake bands of Ojibwe agreed to an off-reservation casino in partnership with the state. But Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) is considering an alternate proposal that involves the Canterbury Park track, a private entity.

The Leech Lake Band said it will not support the proposal. Pawlenty plans to continue talks with the White Earth and Red Lake bands but lawmakers say approval of either the tribal-state casino or the merger with the racetrack is in doubt.
