Letter: Deal opens door to off-reservation casinos

printer friendly
"When did The Oregonian adopt a policy that elected officials not be held accountable for their policy decisions? That's exactly what you argue about Gov. Ted Kulongoski's decision to change state policy and approve Oregon's first off-reservation casino in the Columbia River Gorge.

In approving the gorge casino, Kulongoski has opened the door to more casinos near urban areas across the state. When faced with a similar choice, Kulongoski's predecessor, John Kitzhaber, chose to maintain a policy limiting tribes to one casino, on reservation lands.

This isn't a decision about one casino; it's a decision that will affect the future of our state for years to come."
