The Bureau of Indian Affairs will be holding five public hearings this month on an Oregon tribe's off-reservation gaming proposal.
The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs signed a compact with the state for $300 million casino in Cascade Locks. Jim Cason, the Interior Department's associate deputy secretary, rejected the agreement because the land in question is not yet held in trust.
As part of the process, the BIA is holding hearings on September 15 and September 17 in Cascade Locks; on September 19 in Portland, on September 21 in Hood River and
on September 28 in Stevenson, Washington [Federal Register Notice].
Other tribes in Oregon are opposing the proposal.
