California lawmaker criticizes non-reservation casino

printer friendly
California State Sen. Dean Florez (D) says he will fight a non-reservation casino in Madera County even though it is not located in his district.

Florez said the North Fork Mono Tribe is engaging in "reservation shopping." He is worried that casinos will make the state's highways look like "the Las Vegas strip," The Bakersfield Californian reported.

In January, Florez attended the Western Indian Gaming Conference where he heard from tribal leaders who oppose non-reservation gaming. He then started to criticize tribes who are seeking casinos on land that is not currently in trust or part of a reservation.
