Wisconsin governor denies influence on compact

printer friendly
Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle (D) denies former governor Martin Schreiber influenced decisions on the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe's gaming compact.

Schreiber is a registered lobbyist for the tribe. His firm reportedly receives $877,800 a year for lobbying and public relations work.

Schreiber said he helped negotiate the tribe's compact but says he never approached Doyle directly. Doyle said he never gave preferential treatment to the tribe despite his close relationship with Schreiber.

The tribe and Doyle signed a compact last month after their first one was invalidated by the state Supreme Court.
