State gaming commission criticized at summit

The Washington State Gambling Commission was criticized by a county prosecutor on the opening day of the Northwest Gaming Law Summit.

King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng said the commission is promoting gaming instead of regulating it. He cited a recent deal negotiated with the Spokane Tribe that would have allowed an off-reservation casino in exchange for a cut of the revenues.

"The other 28 tribes would immediately want off-reservation casinos and 7,500 machines, too," Maleng was quoted as saying.

The summit continues today. A new bill by Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) to overhaul the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act will be discussed at a panel.
