UKB land transfer in Alabama stirs controversy

printer friendly
The possibility of another tribal casino in Alabama, has stirred controversy even though gaming might be years away.

The United Keetoowah Band in Oklahoma plans to accept 69 acres in Fort Payne. A local businessman says the tribe could start Class II gaming on the land, similar to gaming facilities run by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, the only federally recognized tribe in the state.

Lawmakers, including Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama), say they will fight any casino. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Alabama) says he is trying to declare a moratorium on new gaming facilities. Some interest groups also say they are opposed.

UKB leaders say a casino, if any, is years away. They plan to break ground on a cultural center in May.
