The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is watching how debate unfolds on a bill to legalize slot machines in the state.
The tribe has previously expressed interest in opening a casino. If slots are legalized, the tribe will be able to offer a full-blown Class III casino, legal experts say.
The tribe has a reservation on the island of Martha's Vineyard but isn't interested in any development there. The tribe falls under a special act of Congress that subjects its settlement lands to state jurisdiction.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe just won preliminary recognition and would be eligible for gaming once its recognition is finalized.
