Narragansett Tribe ramps up casino campaign

printer friendly
The Narragansett Tribe and partner Harrah's Entertainment have ramped up their campaign to bring a casino to Rhode Island.

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas said the casino will generate jobs and revenue for the state. Many gamblers end up going to Connecticut to play at the two tribal casinos there.

"Here you've got casinos from Connecticut advertising to take our money in Rhode Island," he told The Providence Journal. "We need to stop it."

The tribe isn't allowed to engage in gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The tribe has to amend the state constitution to authorize the proposed casino.

Voters will decide on the issue this November. Opponents are trying to draw attention to what they say are uncertainties regarding the operation of the casino and its benefits to the state.
