Critics who oppose Jamul casino face eviction

The Jamul Band of Kumeyaay Indians plans to evict two critics and use their property to build a casino.

Walter Rosales and Karen Toggery have been fighting the casino for several years. They say the project will destroy the 6-acre reservation outside of San Diego.

“This is our property,” Rosales told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “I was born here. My ancestry goes back to my great-great-grandmother, which is more than anyone here.”

Rosales and Toggery also say they are the rightful leaders of the tribe. They have lawsuits pending in federal court that challenge the Bureau of Indian Affairs' refusal to get involve in tribal elections.

The current tribal leadership plans to proceed with the casino development. “It's sad, but I can't allow that to stop my people from progressing and getting what they rightfully deserve,” Chairwoman Carlene Chamberlain told the paper.
