Narragansett Tribe to press Congress on rider

Faced with defeat at the polls, the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island will ask Congress to remove a rider that bars the tribe from going under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas said the tribe would start a "small operation" on its reservation if the rider is removed. The tribe would only be allowed to offer slot machines, not table games, he said.

The rider was put into IGRA after the tribe won a court case that said gaming was legal on the reservation. A dispute has arisen because the tribe's settlement act, passed five years before IGRA, subjects the reservation to state laws.
