"I am writing in response to a column published in the Times Herald-Record on March 25, written by Doug George, "Not all Mohawks agree with tax concession for casino."

I am a senior citizen and a longtime resident of Akwesasne. I was actually at the tribal meeting that George made reference to on March 3, a meeting that he suggests he attended but was not present for. The meeting was certainly well-attended.

Like all communities and governments, we don't always agree; I suspect that happens everywhere. I see conflict played out in the papers every day, in local and state politics, in Congress. Leadership is always being tested and challenged; Mohawks are no different. It's no surprise and no secret that the tax issue has generated heat, not just in Akwesasne, but in all of the Native communities across New York for more than 10 years now.

George also suggest that few Mohawks support the development of a Monticello casino. I guess that depends on whom you talk to. I support the tribe's efforts to expand gaming enterprises in Sullivan County, particularly when I know that it means that community members right here at home will benefit."
