The Poarch Creek Band
of Indians in Alabama halted a $246 million casino expansion at a sacred site.
The tribe agreed to suspend work on the Wind Creek Wetumpka as part of an agreement with the
Muscogee Nation of
Oklahoma.
The Muscogees are upset about the disturbance of burial sites at the property,
also known as the Hickory
Ground.
“The decision to halt construction was made to show a measure of good faith from the Poarch Band of Creek Indians after a request from Principal Chief George Tiger,” the Muscogee Nation said in a press release.
The two tribes are set to meet again to discuss the issue.
