"Several bumps have popped up on the road Massachusetts is building toward licensing three casinos and a slots parlor.

And Rhode Islanders worried about when and where the casinos will open - and the impact on their state - should pay attention.

Massachusetts officials have given preference for one of the casinos to a Native American tribe. The Mashpee Wampanoags won the inside track for a $500 million resort casino in Taunton and negotiated a compact with Gov. Patrick's administration.

But the U.S. Dept. of the Interior rejected the deal that would have paid the state 21.5 percent of net gambling revenue, sending the parties back to the negotiating table."
