Lawmakers in New York are expected to debate an expansion of non-Indian gaming this year.
Non-Indian gaming is allowed in some regions of the state but tribes maintain exclusive rights in their areas. A proposal to allow up to seven non-Indian casinos could change the landscape for good.
If lawmakers approve the plan, it will be put to voters for consideration.
The Oneida Nation has already started a campaign to ensure local voters have approval of casinos in their communities.
If non-Indian gaming is approved at the polls, State Sen. Liz Krueger (D) is proposing to use casino licensing fees to start a public fund for campaigns in the state.
