Nation and the Mohegan
Tribe are supporting a bill that would allow them to increase law enforcement services at their casinos.
The Class III gaming compact requires tribes to pay the state for troopers at the casinos. But both tribes are building up their own law enforcement departments so they won't always need the additional officers.
“This is a perfect example of good government,” Mohegan Chief of Staff Chuck Bunnell told lawmakers at a hearing on February 21, The Norwich Bulletin reported. “It is much more efficient for everyone. It enables the state police to be saved for investigating major crimes.”
House Bill 6373 also authorizes the tribes to enter into agreements with the state to arrest non-Indians on the reservation.
