Tribes in California warm up to Internet gambling legislation

It looks like tribes in California are coming together on Internet gaming.

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians proposed an online poker consortium of tribes and non-Indian facilities. The idea was opposed by some of the more successful gaming tribes and the Morongo Band dissolved the group.

But some of the more successful tribes have met recently to discuss a gaming bill, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports. Participants included the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

“Tribes are primed right now to begin moving it, to begin working with state legislators to see something to fruition,” Pechanga Chairman Marc Macarro said at a forum on Internet gaming, the paper reported.

The California Tribal Business Alliance, which represents three tribes with casinos, doesn't appear to be part of the talks.
