A grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota is helping the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe of South Dakota pursue an off-reservation casino.

The Shakopee Tribe announced a $500,000 grant to the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. Of the amount, $16,000 will be used for "research into a new gaming facility," according to a press release.

The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe is seeking to build a $34 million casino on land that was taken into trust after 1988. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is reviewing the application.
