Eight of 11 tribes in Wisconsin support an off-reservation casino for the Menominee Nation. The Menominees plan to build an $800 million casino in Kenosha, about 200 miles from the reservation. The project needs the approval of Gov. Scott Walker (R), who has said all 11 tribes must come to a consensus. “This project will bring millions of dollars in new revenue into the state of Wisconsin and create thousands of quality jobs,” the leaders of the eight tribes said in a letter to Walker. “There should be no question regarding whether or not to approve this project." Without the support of the three remaining tribes, however, the project could be doomed. The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe operates a casino about 40 miles north of the Kenosha site so a new facility could hurt revenues. The Ho-Chunk Nation is pursuing its own off-reservation casino but won't support the Menominees. The Ho-Chunks say Kenosha is within their territory. The Oneida Nation hasn't announced a position either way. Get the Story:
