The Karuk Tribe is one step closer to a casino in northern California.

The California Legislature gave final approval to SB 1224, a bill that ratifies the tribe's Class III gaming compact, on Tuesday. The deal can now be sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for review.

“Today our gaming project took one very large step closer to reality due to the positive energy and commitment from our tribal team and our local partners in the business community and civic leaders in Yreka," Chairman Russell “Buster” Attebery said in a press release. "We are looking forward to a successful business venture that will provide multiple benefits for the entire community through job creation, increased local business revenue and an expansion of vital health and human services.”

The tribe is planning to build a casino in two phases. The first phase calls for a 36,000 square-foot gaming facility with 500 gaming machines, eight table games, a 100-seat restaurant, and on-site parking. A second phase will include a hotel and more gaming space.

The tribe hasn't announced a start date for construction but expects to open the casino in fall of 2015.
