Bush investigating Native Hawaiian scholarships
Wednesday, March 17, 2004

The Bush administration is investigating scholarship preferences for Native Hawaiians at the University of Hawaii, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The Department of Education received a complaint in June 2002 from an attorney who worked on the Rice v. Cayetano U.S. Supreme Court case that struck down an election that was limited to Native Hawaiian voters. Attorney John Goemans said he filed numerous complaints with the Bush administration, challenging loans, housing and education programs for Native Hawaiians.

The Bush administration's top lawyer, Ted Olson, represented a non-Native rancher at oral arguments before the high court. The Department of Justice has raised objections to Native Hawaiian programs and a bill to recognize a Native Hawaiian government.
