Goshute waste dump hearings closed to public

The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board on Monday began holding closed-door hearings on the proposal to store nuclear waste on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah.

The hearings are not open to the public because they deal with military and security concerns. They could last up to three weeks, the Associated Press reports.

The state of Utah is fighting the proposal and argues that an Air Force base next to the facility poses a risk of crashes or stray missiles. Private Fuel Storage, a consortium of eight private utility companies that wants to store waste on the reservation, says the probability of a crash is low.
