Recount possible in close Daschle-Thune race

A recount is possible in the extremely close race between Sen. Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) and Republican John Thune.

A statewide candidate has a right to request a recount if the margin of difference is less than one-quarter of 1 percent of the votes cast. That's what happened in 2002, when Democrat Sen. Tim Johnson beat Thune by 524 votes.

Thune did not seek a recount at the time. But the high stakes involved in this year's race could prompt either candidate to ask for one.
