South Dakota Indians seek action on voting rights

Lawyers representing four South Dakota Natives want a federal judge to move forward with their voting rights case.
In September, U.S. District Judge Karen Schreier ruled that the state violated the voting rights of Native Americans by packing the Pine Ridge Reservation and the Rosebud Sioux Reservation into one state legislative district. She ordered the state to act within 45 days but the state is seeking a delay.
The American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing the Native voters, opposes the delay. The lawyers want Schreier to redraw the district and call a special election next fall.
