GOP refuses compromise on Bush judicial nominees
Wednesday, April 27, 2005
Senate Republicans and the White House have rejected an offer by Democrats to break the impasse over some of President Bush's most controversial judicial nominees.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tennessee) said the deal would require the White House to withdraw some of the nominees and allow filibusters on future nominees. Karl Rove, Bush's top political adviser, said every nominee deserves a vote on the Senate floor.
A deal could have affected the nomination of Bill Myers, the Interior Department's former top lawyer, for a spot on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Tribes and Indian organizations don't want Myers to sit on the court due to his record on sovereignty, sacred sites and the trust relationship.
